Parkdale United Church is a centre for spiritual growth. We believe in lifelong learning, and we offer learning opportunities for children, youth and adults. We have regular Sunday morning programming for children and youth as part of our worship hour, and other learning opportunities for adults and families throughout the year.
We have Nursery staff who are available to care for the youngest among us (infants and pre-school children), on Sunday mornings from 10:15 a.m. until the conclusion of worship. The Nursery is located in the east wing of the building in the Blue Room, a space wonderfully suited for child care. For the safety of all these young ones, we ask that no peanut products be brought to the space.
The program for children and youth at Parkdale United Church has a place for every age. We have a primary class for those spirited grade 1 to 6 kids who like to play and craft and hear stories, and a small group for youth who are interested in thoughtful conversation and discovering what it means to be part of congregational life. We have our own patchwork quilt of homegrown lessons combined with popular curriculum that we rotate through during the year. The kids like dressing up to act out the bible stories, taking over the church kitchen to bake, and running around the church garden best! We try to incorporate the events of the season, tie in to the themes of the special Sundays throughout the year, and participate with the main service periodically. We are always happy to meet new families!
Our Youth Ministry is for youth Grade 7 to 12. On Sunday mornings, the youth of the church gather in the sanctuary for the opening of the worship and then go to their class for a time of learning and conversation. All youth are welcome!
Parkdale United Church is committed to offering a variety of opportunities to enhance adult spiritual development. We offer adult courses in a variety of formats, such as one-day workshops, weekend workshops (Friday evening to Sunday morning), or evening learning events of 4 to 6 weeks. Examples of courses that we have offered in the recent past include Theological Worlds, Sabbath, Signposts of the Spiritual Life, Journalling as a Spiritual Practice, Skills for Living in Relationship, Embracing an Adult Faith, and Two Faiths – One God (Christianity and Islam in Conversation). Adult courses sometimes use a particular book as a basis for discussion and sometimes use audio-visual materials to spark discussion. Adult courses are sometimes related to a season of the church year, such as Advent or Lenten study groups. Courses are led by our minister, by lay leaders in the church and by guest speakers. All are welcome to participate in these learning opportunities, whether or not you are a member of Parkdale United Church.
Join with others on Zoom at 4:30 p.m. on Mondays for an hour of informal but stimulating conversation and reflection on the Bible lectionary readings of the week. We start by reading the Scripture passage that was read in the Sunday worship service, enriching our understanding of the reading by looking at different translations of the Bible. The discussion is thought-provoking as we reflect on how the passage relates to our own lives. The atmosphere is open and encouraging; no Bible experience is needed. All are welcome to join in the Zoom discussions, any Monday you are able from September through June (except Monday holidays). Please contact the church office for the Zoom link.
Parkdale United Church has an indoor labyrinth, located in the lower level of the church, available for those who would like to walk the labyrinth as a spiritual, healing or meditative experience. Walking the labyrinth helps some people to feel expansive, grounded, and balanced. It may help reduce grief and enhance physical and emotional healing. Each person experiences the labyrinth in their own way. The labyrinth is open most week days and Sunday mornings.
